Pacific F2000 Championship Series signs Cunningham

Seeking to repeat as Pacific F2000 Series champions, Dave Freitas Racing has announced the signing New Zealand driver Mitch Cunningham.

Cunningham, who is the younger brother of 2005 Indy Pro Series Champion and 2003 World Karting Champion Wade Cunningham, joins Dave Freitas Racing following a very successful test with the California based team. Making his car racing debut, the young New Zealand driver will pilot a Zetec powered Van Diemen RF03 and partner Ira Fierberg and Peter Hastrup at Dave Freitas Racing in 2007.

Born and raised in Auckland, New Zealand, Cunningham will follow in his brothers footsteps, making his car racing debut in North America. Like his championship-winning sibling before him, the 20 year-old will compete in the competitive Formula Ford 2000 class, having achieved success in the karting ranks. A factory driver for kart manufacturer CRG, Cunningham has raced karts around the world for the past 12 years, winning numerous times.

Operating out of Fullerton, Calif., Dave Freitas Racing has developed into one of the top Formula Ford 2000 race teams on the West Coast over the past few years. A regular front-runner and race winner in the class, the team enjoyed a breakthrough season in 2006. With Robert Podlesni leading the team's efforts, DFR captured the Pacific F2000 Series title, as well as the Spring and Summer Cups, scoring five wins, 10 podium finishes and 6 pole positions.

The entire Dave Freitas Racing team is currently continuing preparations for the 2007 season, with opening doubleheader tentative scheduled for early March.
