Roush: “Dig your own grave and then lay in it”

Jamie McMurray went through three crew chiefs last season in his first season with Roush Racing, so when he asked car owner Jack Roush for a new one for 2007, Roush told McMurray he was on his own. "You need to go out and find who you think you're going to work well with," Roush told McMurray.

Perhaps it was even a little more blunt than that.

"I don't remember exactly how he worded it, but something like, 'You need to kind of dig your own grave and then lay in it,'" McMurray said.

No pressure, eh? So last year during the Chase For The Nextel Cup, McMurray made a list of 10 crew chiefs he wanted to work with and consulted with Roush.

"Jack and [Nextel Cup general manager] Max [Jones] left it up to me to make the initial phone calls and to go out and find the guy that I want and find somebody that I felt would fight for me and be on my side," McMurray said. Scenedaily.com
