Edmonton to host Atlantic doubleheader
The Grand Prix of Edmonton will host Rounds 9-10 of the Atlantic Championship in ’07, as the 300-horsepower Mazda-Cosworth/Swift/Cooper machines will visit the fast and exciting 1.9-mile road circuit constructed at Edmonton’s City Centre Airport, July 20-22. Practice and qualifying for the first race of the weekend will take place on Friday, July 20 while qualifying for the second event and Round 9 will run on Saturday, July 21. The 10th round of Atlantic action will take the green flag on Sunday, July 22 to close out the action-packed weekend, which will also feature the cars of the Champ Car World Series.
The Edmonton weekend will be the second doubleheader event on this season’s Atlantic docket. The Champ Car Grand Prix of Portland will host Rounds 4-5 of the championship, June 9-10. This marks the first time that the Atlantic series has featured a pair of doubleheaders in the same season since 2005 when Portland and Cleveland hosted back-to-back twin bills. The Atlantic calendar has featured at least one doubleheader weekend for the last four consecutive seasons.
"We’re excited to add a second race to our very popular event in Edmonton," said Vicki O’Connor, managing director for the 2007 Cooper Tires Presents The Champ Car Atlantic Championship Powered by Mazda. "Since Champ Car began racing at the Grand Prix of Edmonton airport course in 2005 the Atlantic races there have been extremely exciting and the fans have shown tremendous support for the Atlantic series. Â We’re looking forward to a great weekend of racing in July."
