Bristol concrete to be resurfaced after race

Of the 29 previous races contested on concrete at Bristol Motor Speedway, Rusty Wallace was the most prolific winner, cruising into Victory Lane six times after the track was transformed from asphalt to concrete for the 1992 August event. Wallace's first win on concrete came in the spring of 1993. In the sixteen races he competed in on the World's Fastest Half-Mile from '93 to 2000, when he swept both Cup events that year, Wallace had a 37 percent winning percentage at the track where he ultimately won nine times before retiring after the 2005 season. The 30th race on the current concrete surface, the Food City 500 on Sunday, March 25, will be the final one on the old surface. After the race, work will begin on a new concrete surface that will be in place for the Sharpie 500 on Aug. 25. Two drivers, Jeff Gordon and Kurt Busch, will have an opportunity to match Wallace's efforts on the old surface with Food City 500 victories Sunday. Busch and Gordon each have five wins at BMS, all of them on concrete. Busch has been the most successful of late, having won five of the last 10 races while Gordon's wins came between the spring race of 1995 and the 2002 August event.
