Carlin secure first row of the grid at Nürburgring

Sebastian Vettel has taken pole position at his home World Series event this morning, at the Nürburgring in Germany. Local hero Vettel put in a stunning lap in the closing stages of qualifying to secure the front spot. Mikhail Aleshin was equally impressive setting the fastest time in his qualifying group and will line up alongside his team mate for the first race later today.

Currently top in the team standings, the Carlin team have put in a dominating performance so far in Germany, finishing yesterday’s practice session first and second. Under World Series regulations, the FR3.5 drivers are split into two groups for qualifying, each group taking part in a 20 minute qualifying session. Aleshin was the first Carlin driver on track, duly securing first place in his group. With a front row start secured, Aleshin waited and watched the second qualifying group to see if his efforts would be enough to secure pole.

Vettel looked threatening throughout qualifying, setting the quickest time with 12 minutes to go, only to have his time bettered by Alvaro Parente. In the dying seconds of the session Vettel put in a fantastic lap to reclaim the top spot, becoming the first driver to break into the 1.42s and also denying team mate Aleshin of his second Nürburgring pole.

Pole sitter Vettel commented, “It was the result we were looking for since Friday morning. Pole position is the most important thing as it’s hard to overtake here. There will be some opportunity to pass in the pit stops should we have any problems, but of course it’s so much easier from pole. It’s a great basis to build on and try and win the race. I’m feeling very confident."
