Toyota changes to cost performance – Howett

(GMM) Toyota's solution for its failing front suspension pieces will cost the Cologne built cars a few tenths every lap.

That is the admission of team president John Howett, who explained that Jarno Trulli and Ralf Schumacher emerged from the garage on Saturday morning equipped with modified setups.

"We have been using the same part for two years and we even had it here last year," the Briton said at the Circuit Gilles Villeneuve, after speculation had hinted at a withdrawal from the event following Trulli's sinister failures on Friday.

An overnight investigation, however, showed that some setup tweaks – and performance compromises – could prevent the problem from recurring.

Howett said no parts had actually been changed, for the simple reason that the team does not bring alternate designs for the suspension to races.

Instead, the cars are running more 'camber' and softer suspension settings.

"It is not completely optimal but we will probably lose only two tenths or so. But at least we can race," he is quoted as saying by the German broadcaster Premiere.
