Werner puts Audi on top again
Werner, who won at Road America in 2004 and captured pole position in 2003, sat 0.29 seconds ahead of Allan McNish in the sister Audi he will share with Dindo Capello. The Audis are trying to capture their first overall race win in the Series since St. Petersburg in late March.
Porsches held the third through sixth positions overall and the first four positions in P2. Romain Dumas led the way for Penske Motorsports with a 1:50.350 in the No. 7 Porsche RS Spyder. The sister car of Ryan Briscoe and Sascha Maassen were another three-tenths behind. Dyson Racing’s two Porsches were third and fourth, followed by the three Acura-powered entries.
Corvette Racing held serve in GT1 with Oliver Gavin the fastest driver at 2:01.169. The No. 4 Corvette C6.R he is driving with Olivier Beretta was not quite a full second ahead of the sister car of Johnny O’Connell and Jan Magnussen with the Doran Racing Maserati MC12 another 1.5 seconds behind.
Peter Dumbreck made giant leaps from Thursday’s test by posting the fastest time in GT2 in his first official session in the American Le Mans Series. He piloted Petersen Motorsports/White Lightning Racing’s Ferrari F430 GT to a time of 2:08.978, less than 0.4 seconds better than the No. 45 Flying Lizard Motorsports Porsche 911 GT3 RSR of championship leaders Jörg Bergmeister and Johannes van Overbeek.
Risi Competizione’s first Ferrari of Gianmaria Bruni and Eric Helary sat third at 2:09.531 with the top five cars within a second of each other.
The next round of the American Le Mans Series is the Generac 500 at Road America in Elkhart Lake, Wisc. The four-hour race is scheduled for 4 p.m. CT on Saturday, August 11. NBC Sports will broadcast the race from 2:30-4:30 p.m. ET on Sunday, August 12.
