It’s official: Gibbs moving from GM to Toyota
Every car that has come out of the Joe Gibbs Racing shop has been a General Motors vehicle since the team's first race in 1992. Starting in 2008, however, JGR will no longer be a GM team, as the team announced Wednesday at a special press conference that it will switch manufacturers to Toyota.
The move is a huge boost for Toyota, which currently has no team in the top 35 in owner points. It will guarantee the manufacturer three spots in the 2008 Daytona 500 and also gives it three drivers – Tony Stewart, Denny Hamlin and JGR newcomer Kyle Busch – who will have made the Chase For The Nextel Cup in 2007.
Toyota has struggled in its first year of Cup competition with Bill Davis Racing, Michael Waltrip Racing and Team Red Bull.
