Ferrari sandbagged at Monza test – Alonso
McLaren's MP4-22 piloted by Alonso and championship leader Lewis Hamilton emerged from the four day test at the same circuit last week appearing to enjoy a clearly dominant position going into this weekend.
Ferrari driver Felipe Massa suggested on the eve of Monza practice, however, that the Maranello based team will indeed be fully competitive in Italy, having secured a dominant one-two in Turkey just two weeks ago.
The red cars were then first and second in morning practice on Friday.
Alonso said of the Monza test: "We were the fastest ones, but it was not a normal situation because, on the last day that I did, Massa was fifth.
"I do not believe that Ferrari had been going to 100 per cent — they kept something in their pockets," he told the Spanish newspaper Diario As.
The 26-year-old Spaniard said running high fuel loads is not the only way a team can conceal its true performance.
"It could be in the tires they use or the revs of the engine. So I don't think that we were quite so fast, nor that they were so slow.
"In the end, when everyone has to put all of their cards on the table, it is going to be like the other races — a tenth up, a tenth behind, and very, very close," Alonso concluded.
