IRL testing at Newton again next week

Three top IndyCar Series teams will be back at Iowa Speedway next week testing wing packages, tires and aerodynamic settings, said Craig Armstrong, the Newton track’s vice president and general manager.

Armstrong said today the testing is tentatively slated to run Oct. 3 and 4, with Oct. 5 serving as a rain date.

He said what drivers will test is not determined, but representatives of Chip Ganassi Racing, Andretti Green Racing and Team Penske appear most likely to be on the track at Newton.

“The object is to come out here and do some tweaking with the wings, the set-ups and the tires to make it a little bit more likely they can race side-by-side and three-wide," Armstrong said. “They want to avoid the one groove approach.

"Obviously, you have to run a race first to know what you can do and they’ve already done that. The race was still an excellent race, but still not as good as they’d like to have it."Des Moines Register
