Worst crowds of 2007 in Champ Car and IRL
Robin Miller: "On the Champ Car side, truth be told, there couldn't have been 25,000 at Vegas on race day (they announced some ridiculous 3-day number) because David Phillips & I counted the seats on the straightaway and they weren't even close to being sold out. Portland was pathetic, just hard to gauge how pathetic. Less than 20,000 though. As for the IRL, Milwaukee was bad (I think I guessed 15,000) and The Glen looked pretty empty as well, although I wasn't there. Michigan had day-long rain and was awful by the green flag, maybe 10,000."
John Oreovicz: "I'd say Portland, which was definitely not helped by a Saturday rainout, was Champ Car's worst. Zolder and Mont-Tremblant were probably next. In the IRL, Milwaukee and Homestead were the worst, probably 20K at best. I should mention Michigan on the IRL side as well. Given one last chance to show their support for open-wheel racing, an estimated 250 fans turned out for Saturday quals. Of course it rained on Sunday."
David Phillips: "Outside of the Denver, Zhuhai and Phoenix Champ Car races — which attracted 0 spectators — I would have to agree that Portland was the worst, although it was hard to get a handle on Vegas. As for the IRL, can't say I attended anything other than the Indy 500. I had planned to go to Mid-Ohio and Belle Isle, but other things got in the way."
David Malsher: "I only know the Champ Car side of course, but I'd agree Portland was the worst. It was one of those days, as our friend Nigel Roebuck put it when describing Jerez some 20 years ago, 'when the track commentator announced crowd changes to the drivers'. I think a more pertinent question would perhaps be 'Which race has shown the sharpest decline year on year', and I fear that is yet to come for Champ Car – namely, Mexico City. Hope I'm wrong."
