IRL purse payout less now than in 1996
The IRL's Brian Barnhart said earlier this week that what the league paid for this year's season-ending race "is basically" what was handed out for the inaugural race in 1996.

At that first Walt Disney World Speedway race in Orlando, Fla., the IRL distributed $1,078,500, with Buzz Calkins' winning team receiving $122,500. Dario Franchitti won this year's season-ending race at Chicagoland Speedway and received a check of $111,400, part of a $1,026,000 purse.
The league's revamped 2008 earnings distribution plan will be officially announced Tuesday.
