Stewards probe Hamilton for erratic driving
10/04/07 (GMM) Stewards at the Chinese grand prix are investigating Lewis Hamilton for allegedly driving erratically behind the safety car a week ago at Fuji Speedway.
Toro Rosso boss Franz Tost, whose driver Sebastian Vettel was penalized ten grid places for the Shanghai race for smashing into Mark Webber, is believed to have brought to the attention of stewards new evidence that shows championship leader Hamilton may have contributed to the incident.
The new evidence is apparently a YouTube video that shows Hamilton erratically swerving and slowing his McLaren before Vettel and Webber collide.
"We understand the stewards of the meeting have received new evidence and are looking into the relevant matter," an FIA official confirmed.
"It would be inappropriate for us to comment any further at this particular stage, in particular as to what penalty, if any, might be imposed."
The F1 regulations require the first car behind the safety car to keep a constant gap of about five meters.
"Clearly there was not a sensible rhythm," Webber said on Thursday, confirming that the matter will also be raised in the drivers' briefing in China.
"I think he did a shit job. He did a shit job and that's it," the Australian added.
