DEI’s Gilmore suffers aneurysm

UPDATE Dale Earnhardt, Inc. vice president Richie Gilmore has been treated and released from a Birmingham, Alabama hospital after suffering what has been diagnosed as a minor aneurysm. Gilmore suffered stroke-like symptoms on Friday and was taken to Birmingham for evaluation. He is currently back home in Mooresville, N.C.

“I spoke with both Richie and his wife Lisa on a couple of different occasions today and Richie is doing well," said Max Siegel, president of global operations for Dale Earnhardt, Inc. “He was released today from the hospital and he’s back home getting some rest. 10/06/07 Richie Gilmore, VP of Competition for Dale Earnhardt Inc.. was airlifted to Trinity Medical Center in Birmingham on Friday afternoon after suffering an aneurysm, according to DEI competition director Steve Hmiel. Gilmore was released Saturday morning, according to a nurse at the hospital, once doctors controlled his condition with blood thinners. He was expected to fly back to his home in Sherrill’s Ford, N.C.

Gilmore, 41, of Rochester, N.H., was hired by DEI as the chief engine builder in 1998 after spending eight years with Hendrick Motorsports. He has been instrumental this season in combining the engine efforts of DEI and Richard Childress Racing.
