Video: Maintaining hybrids can be difficult

While hybrids are known for conserving fuel consumption, the question as to where and how to maintain these types of vehicles is still somewhat unclear. Hybrids have two power sources that each require separate attention – its conventional gas engine and an electric motor connected to a battery. General Motors reports that battery-operated engines can prove deadly due to their voltage capacity and many technicians are not properly trained to work on them. To ensure the safety of both the vehicle and mechanic, automakers recommend servicing a hybrid at the dealership where it was purchased. If a driver moves and this is not an option, consumers are advised to talk to their local vehicle repair shop to determine which of their mechanics have been properly trained to work on a hybrid.
