Helio Castroneves' dancing partner, Julianne Hough, and her brother, (Nico Rosberg look-alike) Derek, also competing on "Dancing with the Stars," were featured in a segment on ABC's 20/20 program Friday night. Julianne is sensational when she cha-chas and he's magic with the mambo. She can tame the tango and the man. And he can turn a clumsy misstep into a grace note. Julianne, 19, and her brother Derek, 22, are quite simply among the very best dancers on the planet. The Houghs have been dancing for nearly a decade, having left their home in Utah as children for a new life of professional training and competition in England. This season, the normally loving brother and sister will dance into some good old-fashioned sibling rivalry as they compete to win the title and the hearts of American viewers on "Dancing with the Stars." 09/26/07 Helio Castroneves and his dance partner, Julianne Hough, were the top vote-getters in Tuesday night's men's portion of "Dancing With The Stars," posting the second-highest total of the two-night opening week.
Two-time Indianapolis 500 winner Castroneves and professional dancer Hough received 25 out of a possible 30 points from the judges, beating the five other contestants by at least four points each. Castroneves' competitors among the male stars include boxer Floyd Mayweather soap opera actor Cameron Mathison and Las Vegas singing legend Wayne Newton. Singer Sabrina Bryan led Monday night's women's competition with 26 points. One of the 12 couples will be eliminated from the 10-week competition during tonight's show.
An average of 18.3 million people have watched the show's first four seasons, and its effect on the contestants has been significant. Former Dallas Cowboys running back Emmitt Smith became a household name outside the football arena. Former Playboy Playmate Kelly Monaco earned a daytime Emmy nomination. Jerry Springer expanded his career beyond sensationalism. "It changes everything; everyone's star has risen," said Deena Katz, the senior talent producer who selects the contestants. "Emmitt Smith wouldn't be (an analyst) at ESPN right now. Joey Fatone wouldn't be hosting two shows. Jerry Springer is Jerry Springer, but even he said he's received offers he would have never had before being on this show. "Does it help? Absolutely it helps." Katz expects the same boost for Castroneves, a 32-year-old IndyCar Series driver who is essentially unknown to most of the U.S. television viewing public.
With his racing helmet off, Katz sees a handsome Brazilian with immaculate black hair, a terrific smile and an engaging personality. It won't hurt that Castroneves is paired with Hough, who led Olympic speed skater Apolo Anton Ohno to last season's title. Late-night talk show host Jimmy Kimmel has predicted Castroneves and Hough will win. "He's darling, and that spark that Emmitt has, that charisma, is what I see in Helio," Katz said. "As a sports figure, men will watch him; women will vote for him. "I'm telling you, the women will love him." More at Indy Star.
