USA mechanic uninjured
Orlando Ledesma, a mechanic on the 'We the People' car fell down in rather dramatic style when he was caught by the air gun which had attached itself to A1 Team France's car when Duval left the pits.
However, Ledesma suffered only minor bruising, and was fit enough to work on the second pit stop as part of the USA squad.
'I saw him coming so I tried to get out of the way,' Ledesma said. 'I tried to pull the hose out but, he just caught it and pulled the whole thing from under me.
'I did the next pit stop and I wasn't worried. It is just part of motor racing. It's the same for the drivers who do not worry about crashing. And if it does he just puts it behind him. It's the same for mechanics.'
By a strange coincidence, Ledesma had already been made famous in the A1GP paddock by being quickest in a driver-versus-mechanics tire change challenge in the build-up to the event.
'Maybe they were trying to take me out,' he joked. 'I just have a couple of bruises – hopefully they will fly me home first class out of sympathy now!'
A1 Team France was given a drive-through penalty for the incident.
'I went to say sorry to him,' Duval said. 'My team went to say sorry too. I couldn't do anything.
'My engineer told me to go but I had the New Zealand car on my left. The USA guys are not too far in front of my pit so I have to put a lot of angle on my steering wheel to pass him.
'With New Zealand on my left I had to come back a bit on the right side and I took the line of the American guy.'
