Etihad Airways signs Abu Dhabi GP naming deal

(GMM) Arab airline Etihad Airways has signed a three year deal to become the naming sponsor of the new Abu Dhabi grand prix, beginning with the inaugural race in the emirate capital in 2009.

The Abu Dhabi-based airline was in 2007 already involved in formula one as the Dutch team Spyker's joint title sponsor.

A press release said the "seven-figure deal" will see the race officially called the 'Etihad Airways Abu Dhabi Grand Prix' until 2011, including trackside advertising and podium branding.

"Securing a title sponsor of this caliber two years out from the first event is further reinforcement that the region is full of excitement and anticipation for the Abu Dhabi grand prix," said F1 chief executive Bernie Ecclestone.

Construction of the 5.6 kilometer Abu Dhabi circuit on Yas Island is currently underway.
