Carl Haas honored at AARWBA

Carl Haas in his younger days

Carl Haas, co-owner of the ultra-successful Newman/Haas/Lanigan Racing team that competes in the Champ Car World Series, received the "Pioneer in Racing Award" Saturday night during the annual banquet for the American Auto Racing Writers and Broadcasters Association (AARWBA). One of several people honored at the Hyatt Regency Hotel in Indianapolis, Haas was cited for "longtime dedication and achievement that have made a difference in the sport."

Emerson Fittipaldi, the 1989 Champ Car titlist and two-time F1 world champion, was featured speaker at the banquet. During his speech, the Brazilian legend paid tribute to another legendary figure in the sport–Haas.

"Indianapolis has so many good memories and I always like to come to Indianapolis," Fittipaldi said. "One reason I wanted to be here tonight is because they are honoring Carl Haas."

Over the years, the "Pioneer in Racing Award" had been given to Roger Penske and Dan Gurney, racing team owners who helped co-found the organization known today as Champ Car World Series. Haas joined the Series in 1983 and his team has become one of the most successful in its history with eight championships, including the past four.
