Superleague signs another team
The southern Spain club emerged as a leading contender for European honors in recent years, taking back-to-back UEFA Cup championships in 2005-06 and 2006-07. They also claimed the 2006 UEFA Super Cup crown, beating Spanish rivals FC Barcelona 3-0 in the final.
Sevilla’s Superleague Formula car will be unveiled Thursday next week at the club’s home ground, Estadio Ram¢n Sánchez Pizjuán by coach Manolo Jiménez and club captain Javi Navarro with the entire playing squad on hand.
The racing team selected to run the Sevilla entry also will be revealed at next week’s unveiling.
While the Spanish media get their opportunity to see the Seville car on February 7, Sevilla fans will also get their own unveiling when the car is revealed prior to the game against FC Barcelona the following weekend.
Sevilla joins leading European rivals AC Milan, PSV Eindhoven, FC Porto, Olympiacos, Borussia Dortmund, RSC Anderlecht, Galatasaray, FC Basel and Brazilian club, Flamengo.
With 10 of the 20 clubs already now secured, Brazilian and UK football fans will be the next to celebrate with an upcoming Superleague Formula announcement – the second Brazilian team and the initial UK club. Additional clubs from France, Mexico, Korea, Portugal and the United Arab Emirates have also agreed to terms with Superleague Formula and these are scheduled to be announced during the coming weeks.
After concluding 2007 with back-to-back launches for Flamengo, RSC Anderlecht and FC Basel, Superleague Formula has kicked off 2008 with a launch for FC Porto and a major appearance at the Autosport International show in Birmingham, UK.
This will be followed by the Sevilla launch; a Galatasaray launch in Istanbul, Turkey; and the first running of the 750 horsepower, V-12 powered Superleague Formula car at Donington Park in early March.
“The Superleague Formula grid is filling fast and we are thrilled to welcome our first Spanish club," Superleague Formula President and CEO, Alex Andreu said.
“Sevilla has recorded some outstanding results across Europe in recent years and I am sure the club is very keen to continue this European success on the race track as well.
“Being a Spanish-based company, having our first Spanish club join the championship is a great moment for us. Superleague Formula is going through a very exciting phase – the countdown to our first race in August at Donington Park is looming large and we have lots of exciting news about new clubs and a succession of launches coming up very soon."
