Australia team recruits new rookie
Current lead driver John Martin will participate in his final rookie session next week in Mexico City before he becomes ineligible. The team has now confirmed that Nathan Antunes will drive Jackaroo in the rookie sessions in Shanghai and at the season finale at Brands Hatch.
Antunes, 19, impressed seat holder Alan Jones while racing in the supporting Toyota Racing Series in Taupo, New Zealand back in January.
‘Nathan was on track when we were at Taupo and this was good for the entire team to evaluate their impression of his talent,’ Jones said. ‘We continued to watch his progress and made the decision to invite Nathan to the team to assist John with the car over the remaining rounds.
Nathan has knowledge of the circuits we have left to race on, with Mexico his role will be to observe the team strategies and communications as well as watching the other drivers and cars on track with specific regard to the rules and regulations of A1GP.
Antunes is overjoyed at the news.
He said: ‘This is a great opportunity to move into an international formula that is regarded as a premium sport.
‘I have been watching A1 Team Australia since the series started three years ago and believe right now the team are at the victory stage and I want to be there for the first of many. Representing my country is what dreams are made of for any sportsperson.’
