Gordon says Stewart went too far
“I think Tony went a little overboard, but I had talked to him before the race, and I could tell he was pretty wound up about the tires," Gordon said while testing at Darlington Monday. “It was a very uncomfortable situation for 500 miles, but … Goodyear was in a tough situation. They overreacted and went a little too far."
Greg Biffle continued the criticism Monday, although in a much less harsh tone than Stewart did on Sunday.
“I’m sure they will go back and look for a way to soften the tire," Biffle said. “It was probably the least amount of grip of any tire I have driven on. We know you have to have safety built in, but we have to have a tire we can be aggressive with and compete on. We did not have that Sunday."
Newman pointed out that it’s hard to get the correct tire compound for each track and Goodyear missed this time in terms of grip. He was quick to note however that cars had no safety problems Sunday.
“What Tony said is true," Newman said. “Did the cars handle good? No. Did the tires stick good? No. Did we anticipate that much less grip? No.
“But you learn by experience. We learn to put ourselves on the edge, at the max, and we couldn’t do that. But there is some give and take we have to deal with, and they will go back to the drawing board." Cup Scene Daily
