Sebring Hour 3: Audi runs 1-2
McNish in the leading Audi ahead of the Peugeot |
Audi’s Allan McNish moved his Audi R10 TDI into the lead of the 56th Mobil 1 Twelve Hours of Sebring presented Fresh from Florida while the Peugeot 908 sat in pitlane with mechanics working on the hydraulics of the factory prototype. McNish led Mike Rockenfeller back to a green-flag restart just shy of the three-hour mark Saturday.
As the green flag prepared to fly, the Peugeot rejoined the race ahead of the leaders with Stephane Sarrazin three laps down and ninth overall.
Nic Minassian and Pedro Lamy had dominated the early going for the Peugeot, leading by more than 30 seconds over the Audis, Penske Racing’s Porsche RS Spyder and Andretti Green Racing’s Acura ARX-01b. Marco Andretti drove the opening three stints for AGR and took the overall lead into the second hour, following in the footsteps of grandfather Mario, who last led at Sebring as he won the race for the third time in 1972.
AGR was the LMP2 leader during the caution with Christian Fittipaldi ahead of Penske’s Romain Dumas.
In GT1, Ron Fellows led for Corvette Racing in the No. 3 Corvette C6.R. Fellows, Johnny O’Connell and Jan Magnussen led Bell Motorsports’ Aston Martin DBR9 and Chapman Ducote by two laps. The No. 4 Corvette lost time replacing a failed halfshaft.
Risi Competizione’s Ferrari F430 GT and Gianmaria Bruni led GT2 over Bryce Miller in the Farnbacher Loles Racing Porsche 911 GT3 RSR.
The most recent caution came out after Paul Drayson collided with the outside tire wall at Turn 1 in the Drayson-Barwell Motorsport Aston Martin DBRS9 in class.
