IndyCar tries knockout qualifying today

A new qualifying procedure for road and street circuit IndyCar events has participants and fans intrigued for today's Honda GP of St. Pete qualifying. Today's 26 cars will be randomly divided into a pair of 20-minute sessions, with the top six in each advancing to the second round.

Those 12 cars will start anew in a session that spans 15 minutes. The third and final round, known as the Firestone Fast Six, will feature the fastest six in a 10-minute shootout.

In short, it's a knockout format similar to what Formula One utilizes, and it begins at 10:55 a.m. this morning.
