Boss ‘hopeful’ Heikki will be fit for Turkey

Kovalainen suffered a concussion Sunday in Barcelona

(GMM) McLaren executive Martin Whitmarsh has confirmed the severity of Heikki Kovalainen's Barcelona crash but is hopeful the Finn will be back in action for the next race in Turkey in two weeks.

Former triple world champion Sir Jackie Stewart declared it a "miracle" that the 26-year-old was able to emerge only with concussion from an impact that was measured by telemetry at 26G.

"Heikki has had a full head scan and, thankfully, there was no bruising," Whitmarsh, the Woking based team's chief executive, is quoted as saying after Kovalainen spent the night in a Barcelona hospital.

"He will have a body scan but at the moment we are hopeful he will be at the next race in Turkey in two weeks.

"He was lucid in hospital. In fact, he was jolly, which is typical of Heikki," he added.

Whitmarsh said he has also had a chance to look over the remains of Kovalainen's MP4-23 car.

"When you see the state of the chassis it is a frightening thing to look at," the Briton confirmed.
