Man pays record £5.5m for Ferrari

Chris Evans has paid £5.5million ($11 million) for a vintage Ferrari – a world record for a car at auction. The multi-millionaire broadcaster outbid rivals to land the 1961 Ferrari 250 GT California Spyder. Bidding in the front row, while sipping beer from a bottle, the 42-year-old's successful bid topped more than £5million.

A ten per cent buyer's premium took his final bill to more than £5.5million at the sale organized by RM Auctions and Sotheby's in Maranello, Italy.

The dark blue sportscar used to belong to James Coburn, star of The Magnificent Seven and The Great Escape, who died in 2002. He had bought it second-hand in 1964.

Hollywood stars Steve McQueen and Clint Eastwood also owned similar cars.

Evans is a huge car fan and owns several expensive vehicles, including another Ferrari.
