DC confident he’ll race despite Monaco crash
The Scot, F1's oldest active competitor, visited the medical centre after climbing unaided from the wreck of his Red Bull in the harbor chicane escape road.
He admitted to simply losing control of the car as he braked from nearly 300kph at the exit of the tunnel.
Coulthard, 37, also admitted to reporters at Monte Carlo that – despite knocking his head and elbow – he was keen to get out of the car before the medical team got to him.
"I didn't want to be lying on a stretcher connected to a drip," he said.
Asked to rate the accident among the numerous hits he has taken since debuting in 1994, Coulthard answered: "This was one of the biggest."
He was lucky to have slid into the escape road, however, and not the dividing barrier that knocked Jenson Button out in 2003, and put Karl Wendlinger into a coma fourteen years ago.
"Maybe it doesn't look much from the outside, but it fucking hurts when you hit the barrier," Coulthard admitted.
He said he is confident he will be okay to race on Sunday.
"I'll see how I feel tomorrow, but I think I will be alright. I look forward to the race," Coulthard added.
