Jeff Gordon was fastest in Cup practice
Jeff Gordon topped Friday’s NASCAR Sprint Cup practice in preparation for Saturday night’s Chevy Rock & Roll 400 at Richmond International Raceway.
Gordon, who ran a lap of 121.534 mph, was followed closely in speed by David Ragan at 121.529. Ragan is 13th in the standings and looking to earn a spot in the Chase For The NASCAR Sprint Cup.
Chip Ganassi Racing’s Juan Pablo Montoya was third at 121.419, with Dale Earnhardt Jr. and Mark Martin rounding out the top five.
Sixth through 10th in speed were Greg Biffle and Jamie McMurray, Jeff Burton, Joey Logano and Reed Sorenson.
Logano, who is attempting to make his first Cup start in a fourth JRG entry, had to qualify based on speed since his team doesn’t have owner points. With the qualifying rain out he will not start the race.
