Megenbier & Williams Claim Pole Positions for Doubleheader in NJ

Shane Williams, of Capetown, South Africa, and Timmy Megenbier, of Melrose Park, Ill., have both claimed pole positions in the upcoming Jetta TDI Cup doubleheader to be held this Saturday and Sunday at New Jersey Motorsport Park.

Williams is a guest driver for the weekend races and is from the ADAC Volkswagen Polo Cup in Germany where he was the mid-season points leader, and Megenbier will be on the pole position for the first time this season. Saturday’s race will take place at 11:20 a.m. and Sunday’s at 8:30 a.m.

“It was quite exciting. I knew I did a fast time, but I didn’t really know where I was and when I found out I was on the pole position I was really happy," said Williams. “I’m very happy to be in America on the exchange program. The experience with the cars and the people is really exciting for me."

Williams is a participant in the Volkswagen student exchange program, a program established to link Volkswagen’s international one-make cups in China, Germany, Japan and the USA. It helps the drivers further their education by participating in foreign competitions, giving them the chance to take a look behind the scenes of other series and to prove their skills in completely unfamiliar circumstances.

“This morning’s driving in the rain was pretty decent, but I just couldn’t get it together for the first race qualifier," said Megenbier. “After Iowa I went over everything I did, and just went out there and pushed hard and kept it on the track, went deep and tried different lines, and I ended up qualifying on the pole. I’m really excited."

Both qualifying races were run in one day as part of the challenging schedule the 31 drivers face this weekend that includes back-to-back race days. The mixture of rain in the morning and drier conditions in the afternoon helped prepare the drivers for any weather they may encounter on Saturday and Sunday.
