Judge allows Castroneves to race

UPDATE #1 Yes, the granted approval of the request to allow Helio to go to Australia was given. However, according to Docket 28, though, the order was stayed until the end of business on Tuesday, October 14th. This gives the U. S. Attorney time to appeal the decision. If no appeal is filed by then, Helio is free to go (to Australia). IsitMayYet.com

10/10/08 Helio Castroneves is asking a Miami judge to change his bail conditions on tax charges so he can compete in a race in Australia later this month.

The race car driver and 2007 Dancing with the Stars champ is currently prevented by court order from leaving the country. A judge scheduled a hearing Friday afternoon on Castroneves' request for the change so he can drive in the Oct. 26 race. Castroneves was indicted last week on federal conspiracy and tax evasion charges and is free on $10 million bail. Prosecutors say Castroneves used offshore accounts to hide millions of dollars in income from the Internal Revenue Service. Castroneves insists he is innocent and that he relied on advice from tax experts for his financial dealings. MiamiHerald.com
