Bourdais blasts Massa after penalty

Bourdais was holding off Massa on Sunday

10/12/08 Toro Rosso's Bourdais, who is fighting to keep his place in Formula One next season, was exiting the pits after his second and final stop at the start of lap 51 when he and Massa tangled at the first corner.

The Brazilian spun his Ferrari before continuing.

The race stewards deemed that Bourdais, who had the inside line to the right-hand corner, had caused the collision, and hit him with a drive-through penalty, which became a 25-second penalty as it was imposed after the race.

The Frenchman, who initially finished sixth, was eventually classified tenth, and said that he didn't understand Massa's conduct.

"I did everything I could not to run into him, and he just squeezed and turned and behaved like I didn't exist, like I wasn't there," Bourdais fumed.

"What am I supposed to do, evaporate? It's just a little bit of respect. You give each other room and then everything goes right; if you don't, for sure it's going to be an incident."

Massa benefited from Bourdais' penalty by being bumped up to seventh and is now five points behind championship leader Lewis Hamilton of McLaren with two races remaining.

Bourdais, a four-time Champ Car champion with plenty of experience of title chases, said he found it hard to understand why Massa took what he felt was "an unnecessary risk".

"You've got everything to lose and nothing to win," Bourdais said.

"He was going to pit in three laps. I was ahead of him, and he was going to finish behind us anyway. Why would you even think about doing something like that? I don't understand."

For his part, Massa described Bourdais' defense of his position as "too optimistic".

"I was in the corner and he drove into me driving out of the box (pits)," Massa said.

"For me, it was completely wrong." Fox Sports
