Will Power goes surfing in Surfers

Team Australia IndyCar star Will Power becomes an honorary member of the Southport Surf Life Saving Club upon his arrival on the Gold Coast ahead of next week's Nikon Indy 300

Team Australia IndyCar star and local favorite Will Power has today arrived on the Gold Coast ahead of his home event, the Nikon 300 on October 23-26.

All year the sun-loving Queenslander has been ‘hanging out’ to get back to one of the most famous sections of coastline in the world, the beaches of the Gold Coast.

So upon his arrival, Power ensured that his first port of call was the beach, right beside the circuit where he has earned pole in the Aussie Vineyards – Team Australia car for the past two years.

“This is definitely one of my very favorite places in the world," said Power.

“I love the beach and the surf but I don’t get much of a chance to do anything like this in the US, so it’s usually the first thing I do each time I come home.

“It’s very unique having the beach and the waves right up against the skyscrapers and the city.

“When the Nikon Indy 300 comes around we even have a world-class race track right beside the beach. It’s all pretty cool."

Power is based in Indianapolis, Indiana in the United States during the IndyCar Series season, a land-locked city in the Midwest where the vast majority of the IndyCar Series drivers and teams are based.

Whenever he returns to the Gold Coast, Power is quick to hit the beach for a swim. This year, he was greeted by a pleasant surprise.

When members of the Southport Surf Life Saving Club heard of Power’s love for all things sand and surf, they were quick to acknowledge his passion with an honorary member of their club.

“When we heard that Will loves the surf we thought it would be great that he be a member of our surf club," said Southport Surf Club General Manager Steve Condrom.

“With all of his racing commitments with Team Australia in the United States, I know that Will doesn’t get much of a chance to enjoy the beach. But when he is here we’re keen to make sure he gets down to the beach as much as possible."

While Power is now on the Gold Coast, his green and gold #8 Aussie Vineyards – Team Australia IndyCar remains in transit, part of a massive airlift of 36 IndyCars from Indianapolis to Brisbane.

The cars and equipment will be transported to the Nikon Indy 300 pit lane on Sunday morning and Power will unveil his car, as well as that of his KV Racing Technology team-mate Oriol Servia, at midday on Sunday.
