Guthrie Signs to Drive for Guthrie Meyer Racing
Guthrie finished tenth in the 2008 Firestone Indy Lights championship, earning one top five and six top ten finishes. Guthrie's open wheel career includes thirty-seven Firestone Indy Lights starts with a best finish of fourth at the Milwaukee Mile event in 2007. Guthrie has also competed with great success in Karting, SCCA Formula Ford, and the Star Mazda Pro Series. For his accomplishments, Sean garnered the Star Mazda Pro Series Motec Most Improved Driver Award in 2005 and the Firestone Indy Lights Ethos for Earth Hard Charger Award in 2008.
The ninth Firestone Indy Lights season begins with a double-header April 4 and 5 on the Streets of St. Petersburg as a part of the Honda Grand Prix of St. Petersburg weekend.
"I am very excited with the merger between my dad, Guthrie Racing and Butch Meyer," stated Sean Guthrie. "Guthrie Racing has been building a world class team since 2005 when we first entered the Star Mazda Pro Series. From that day forward, we have had big dreams and high expectations. We have been slowly fulfilling those expectations, but I think Butch will bring the rest of the needed ingredients to speed up that process. The cars and team will be completely new from what people have seen from Guthrie Racing in the past and I am confident that Guthrie Meyer Racing will be the team to watch out for in 2009 and I am very happy that I am going to be a part of that."
"It's really great to be able to work with my son, Sean," said Jim Guthrie, Co-Owner of Guthrie Meyer Racing. "We have been racing together since he was 5 years old and it's something that is very special to me. Sean continues to mature as a race driver and with Butch's help this will be Sean's best season ever."
"I am really looking forward to working with Sean," said Louis (Butch) Meyer III, Co-Owner of Guthrie Meyer. I have watched Sean over the last couple years and have always been impressed with his racing ability. Sean is a class act on and off the track, an excellent driver and a fierce competitor. Sean's stand on the gas attitude will surely put GMR in the 2009 Firestone Indy Lights winner's circle."
