Academy of Motorsports Announces a 2-Day Open House

The Academy of Motorsports (TAM) invites families to visit the first college-preparatory school with curriculum primarily focused on the motorsports industry. "TAM's" goal is to educate and help prepare high school students for a career in the fastest industry in the world; "the auto racing industry". Located in the heart of Motorsports Alley in Virginia, TAM will harness some of the most experienced industry leaders and state of the art equipment and lab facilities in the country. Team that with the unparalleled secondary education at Carlisle School (since 1968) and you have a winning combination. Ted Settle, TAM spokesperson and Director of Virginia Tech's Office of Economic Development refers to the program as "real world comprehensive experience and training in engineering, marketing, business management and driver training. Additionally, TAM is a one-of-a-kind program not offered anywhere else".

On Friday afternoon February 20th prospective students and their parents will tour the campus, academic halls and residence facilities of the prestigious Carlisle School as well as Patrick Henry Community College's facility. On Saturday morning February 21st they will tour VIRginia International Raceway (VIR), have an exclusively private tour of the Virginia Institute for Performance Engineering and Research (VIPER), and visit the Plantation Valley Kart Track. After lunch families are invited to enjoy the races and walk through the pits at their leisure. If you are still around at the end of the day, you can take the family car (or rental car) out for a spin on the historic "Full Course".

Behind-the-wheel experience can vary from student to student. Depending on their driving level students will find themselves on dirt, asphalt, oval and road course tracks at VIR, South Boston Speedway and Martinsville Speedway. Hands-on lab and research education takes place at many facilities in the area. VIPER's program and facilities at VIR, under the direction of Virginia Tech and Old Dominion University, includes the country's only working 8 post shaker rig, 6-DOF and the chassis and engine dynamometers. Patrick Henry Community College's motorsports program and facilities are also part of the TAM program. At Carlisle School, students will be academically prepared for whatever they wish to make of their future. The challenging curriculum offers both International Baccalaureate (IB) and Advanced Placement (AP) level classes in Science, Math, English, Management and other areas in a one-of-a-kind experience for 9th – 12th grade students. In addition, Carlisle celebrated 40 years of excellence in 2008 and proudly boasts a 100% four-year college acceptance rate from their graduates.
