Work on Donington revamp begins

(GMM) Work on a 110m euro upgrade to ready Donington Park for the 2010 British grand prix has now begun.

Last Friday, the circuit was granted council planning permission for the works, including a reprofiled layout, new pit and paddock complex, grandstands and media centre.

The local Derbyshire Evening Telegraph said diggers have now moved in to begin the first work, a 70 foot long access tunnel underneath the track that is scheduled to be completed by late February.

Other changes, including the new pits and the reprofiling of the layout, will be completed by April next year, spokesman Dave Fern said.

"It's a sizeable piece of construction so we can't do this on our own," track boss Simon Gillett said.

"We are going to have a lot of contractors on there, multiple sub-contractors, all drawn from the local area."
