IMSA tribute to Harry Brix

The International Motor Sport Association honors the memory today of Harry Brix, a championship-winning team owner in IMSA and one of the nation’s pioneering businessmen. The 61-year-old Brix passed away Sunday in his hometown of Los Gatos, Calif., after suffering a cardiac arrest some days ago.

“The loss of Harry Brix is a tragic one for all those associated with IMSA and road racing in North America," said Doug Robinson, Executive Director of IMSA. “His pedigree as a driver, team owner and businessman places him in rare company. He was a fantastic competitor, tremendous family figure and most importantly loyal friend to those who knew him. We send our deepest thoughts and condolences to his friends and family at this most difficult time."

Brix was a charismatic and highly respected character, well known to both the sports car and open wheel racing communities as a team owner in the 1990s. Son Harrison followed in his father’s footsteps and competed last season in the American Le Mans Series.

Harry Brix knew what it took to achieve success. His Brix Racing team enjoyed several years at the forefront of the IMSA championships, most notably as 1995 IMSA GT Champions with Jeremy Dale and 1996 GTS Champions with Irv Hoerr and Darrin Brassfield.

He found prosperity off the track as well. In 1971, he founded the “Motor Sound Corporation" with the intent of distributing car audio products in the San Francisco Bay area. The company distributed Panasonic and Motorola radios and sold them primarily to electronics specialty stores. Motor Sound Corporation was renamed The Brix Group, Inc. in 1998 and has grown into one of the largest wireless and car audio distributors in the U.S. The company is privately held by Harry Brix, with his daughter Kristina as President and CEO of American Wireless, a division of the group.

A memorial service will be held at St. Joseph Cathedral in San Jose, Calif., at 10 a.m. Friday, February 6. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to be made in Harry's name to the following organizations:
