Ford sees 4-cylinder future with turbocharging
Ford plans to double its 4-cylinder engine volume and offer a 4-cylinder option for every car and crossover vehicle by 2013. "We're all about the smaller displacement as a way to drive significant fuel economy without sacrificing performance," said Derrick Kuzak, Ford group vice president of global product development. The plan relies on Ford’s EcoBoost engine technology, which combines turbocharging and gasoline direct injection to improve fuel efficiency and combustion, and allows a smaller engine to generate horsepower comparable to a larger conventional engine. Kuzak said it’s conceivable that Ford will even offer a 4-cylinder with EcoBoost on the F-150 pickup. See full story on Ford’s four-cylinder future.
