Jani aims for Swiss Consistency

A1 Team Switzerland’s Neel Jani believes that consistency will be the key that could help it successfully defend the A1GP title it won last season.

Last month’s Taupo event was the best weekend Neel Jani and the team had had all campaign, with the victory in the Feature race backed up by second place in the Sprint. The weekend was also a personal first for Jani, with it being the only one of his eight A1GP victories which he has not secured from pole position.

It moved the team into second place in the overall standings, within 13 points of pace-setter Ireland. Jani insists that rounds such as the Malaysian Feature race, where Jani retired on the opening lap after a spin, will need to be kept at a premium because of Ireland’s seemingly unstoppable consistency, with Adam Carroll putting the Celtic Tiger into the top two five times in the last six races.

“Overall Malaysia cost us a lot because I would have finished on the podium, even starting from the back," Jani told A1GP.com.

“Those are the points we’re missing to Ireland. The main thing this season is to be consistent because Ireland is so consistent, the team has made no mistakes really, and that’s what we need to be doing.

“Victory and failure are so close – just look at Taupo last year. I got a penalty for a jump start last year and it all went downhill from there. This year I made a perfect start and made up positions.

“Kyalami next weekend should be fine for us because I am normally good at learning new tracks and it is pretty much new for everyone."

A1 Team Switzerland has announced a new sponsor ahead of next weekend’s race in Gauteng, with signage of Autobau adorning the team’s car. Autobau is a new motoring experience in Romanshorn at Lake Constance in Switzerland, which will be officially opened on April 16.
