Stefan Wilson signs Indy Lights deal

It was announced today that Stefan Wilson will be the driver of the #19 FIRST Motorsports entry in the 2009 Firestone Indy Lights Series. FIRST Motorsports is a division of the ASR Motorsports Group, LLC. Stefan, who hails from Sheffield, England brings with him an impressive resume including four wins in the 2008 British Formula 3 Championship. Stefan, the younger brother of Justin Wilson, IndyCar and former Formula 1 star began his racing career at the age of nine. In 2007, Stefan claimed four pole positions, four race wins, six fastest laps and two outright lap records on his way to finish 2nd in the Formula Palmer Audi Championship. Following that impressive season, Stefan beat five of the top racing talents Britain had to offer to be named Winner of the prestigious McLaren Autosport BRDC Award.

“We are very proud that Stefan has chosen to join our team and we are looking forward to a very successful season this year," stated team owner, Jon Lewis. “Stefan’s program currently will include all of the road course events in 2009 as we work together to increase the funding to enable him to drive the entire Series schedule."

"I'm delighted to be competing for FIRST Motorsports in the 2009 Firestone Indy Lights Series," said Stefan. "I'm really looking forward to working with Jon Lewis and also with Derrick Walker and his staff. It's been a tough challenge over the winter to secure enough funding to compete in the road course events, but I'd really like to compete in some of the Indy Lights oval events too, especially the Freedom 100, if I can acquire a sponsor in time. For now, I'm focusing 100% on St Petersburg. I've never driven there, but I'll be tapping into my brother's circuit knowledge. I'm looking forward to a successful season and can't wait to get started."

FIRST Motorsports has secured the services of the renown racing organization, Walker Racing to manage race operations for the Team. “Derrick Walker and his operation have a very impressive history in open-wheel racing," continued Lewis. “Walker Racing was very interested in our program and returning to IndyCar. We are very excited about our new association with Walker Racing."

“We are glad to get back into the IndyCar paddock and we look forward to working with Stefan Wilson in his rookie year. I want to thank Jon Lewis and his FIRST Motorsports Team for choosing Walker Racing to field a car in its Indy Lights program," commented Derrick Walker.

FIRST Motorsports recently purchased its 2007 chassis, which is currently going through preparation at Walker Racing, with an extensive road course pre-season test schedule throughout the month of March.
