Crash splits Ferrari in half, kills driver

03/11/09 A red Ferrari crashed into a light pole in Newport Beach Tuesday, killing the driver and injuring a passenger, authorities said. The accident on Jamboree Road near Camelback Street was reported just before 1 a.m., according to a Newport Beach Police Department lieutenant. Video

The Ferrari crashed into a light pole, causing it to topple onto the luxury Italian sports car, a police dispatcher said. The vehicle was split in half, its front portion crushed by the pole, an On Scene Video camera crew reported. Firefighters declared the driver dead at the scene. His name was not immediately released.

A second victim was taken to a hospital following the accident, a Newport Beach Fire Department dispatch supervisor said. Her condition was not immediately reported. The injured victim was a female passenger who was ejected in the crash, On Scene reported.

Skid marks could be seen along the roadway leading up to the site of the crash. The rear of the car came to rest about 75 feet away from the point of impact, On Scene reported. The car, according to On Scene, appeared to be a Ferrari F430, an all-aluminum V8 with a top speed of 205 miles per hour and a price tag of about $300,000.
