BIC chief backs new rule

Bahrain International Circuit general manager Martin Whitaker believes the rule change in determining the 2009 drivers' title can be positive for Formula One.

Motorsport's governing body, the International Automobile Federation (FIA), announced earlier this week that this season's drivers' title will be awarded on basis of most wins and not on points as per the previous years.

The move has received plenty of criticism so far, including reactions of disappointment and concern from the Formula One Teams' Association and especially following what was arguably the most thrilling ending to an F1 championship in 2008.

"Sports is all about winning, not necessarily consistency, so I think this change is of huge relevance," Whitaker said on the sidelines of a media event held at the Bahrain International Circuit's (BIC) Sakhir Tower.

"You'll have to be consistent to win, anyway, so I certainly believe it adds excitement to the championship, and the racing will be more spectacular, most especially following all the new features to the cars this year.

"I'm afraid we won't get much closer than the exciting ending we had last season, when the title was decided literally in the last 500 meters of the last Grand Prix. But we never know, it could once again go down to the wire."
