Cale Yarborough |
As part of the celebration of 60 Years of Racing at Darlington Raceway, Cale Yarborough will serve as the honorary pace car driver to start the 2009 Southern 500 presented by GoDaddy.com announced track President Chris Browning. “We couldn’t be more excited to have Cale pace the field for the Southern 500 presented by GoDaddy.com," said Browning. “Cale’s record of five Southern 500 wins makes him the perfect candidate to pace the field for the return of the Southern 500." Yarborough, a native of nearby Timmonsville, S.C., is tied with Jeff Gordon for the most wins in the Southern 500 with five. In addition to Cale Yarborough several other former Darlington Raceway winners will be honored during pre-race ceremonies prior to the Southern 500 presented by GoDaddy.com. All-time Darlington victory leader David Pearson, Richard Petty, Ned Jarrett, Buddy Baker and Sterling Marlin will also be honored along with all active Darlington winners.
