Former Kentucky track owners slam Bruton Smith

A former Kentucky Speedway owner said that current owner Bruton Smith is mischaracterizing the track’s ability to get a Sprint Cup race.

Smith, however, maintained his stance Monday that the only way for him to bring Sprint Cup racing to Kentucky Speedway in 2010 is for the former track owners to drop their antitrust lawsuit against NASCAR – and that they have a moral obligation to do so.

“It’s in their hands," Smith said. “They have the control of whether we bring a Cup race to Kentucky Speedway or whether we don’t."

Richard Duchossois, chairman of Duchossois Industries, said he resented Smith’s tactics, which included speaking publicly in an effort to persuade Duchossois and the four other original track owners to drop their lawsuit against NASCAR.

“This is NASCAR’s way of trying a force a settlement," Duchossois said. “Bruton Smith has the power to move that Cup date to Kentucky with or without the lawsuit still alive. By going to the press to say it’s our fault is absolutely wrong. This is something that’s going on between NASCAR and Bruton Smith." More at Cincinnati Enquirer
