The Countdown To A1GP Season Five Begins

The 100 days countdown to the start of Season Five of A1GP World Cup of Motorsport started on Tuesday, 14 July, and the organizers of the Nitro SuperGP in Surfers Paradise on the Australian Gold Coast celebrated this landmark by announcing Surf Life Saving Queensland as an official charity of the event on 22 – 25 October.

Nitro SuperGP General Manager, Greg Hooton, made the announcement about the organization saying: “SLSQ are an icon of Queensland and I look forward to seeing their volunteers in action over our event as they celebrate 100 years of life saving and over 100,000 rescues.

“As the Nitro SuperGP ticks off its own 100 days to go milestone, preparations for the event are moving along swiftly with the event set to be officially launched next week here at the Southport Surf Club, our new pit facility is also to be unveiled shortly and ticket pre-sales are on-track."

Joining the celebrations for the official launch on 23 July will be A1GP Chairman, Tony Teixeira, who commented: “I must complement the organizers of this event on the work they are putting in to make it very, very special. We are very excited about this being the first event of our fifth season, and are even sending out one of our Powered by Ferrari racing cars to be part of this official launch. This will give the local fans and media a taster of what to expect in October."

If there was a prize for the busiest team off season, it would certainly go to A1 Team Malaysia. The team’s third annual karting event was held on Sunday (12 July) at the Elite Speedway PLUS karting circuit, which is owned by the team’s commercial partner, PLUS Expressways. It was a real family affair as the karts were supplied by Aaron Lim’s family business, RL Karting, while catering for lunch and breakfast was provided by the restaurant of team mechanic, Tomy Mathen George, and Spritzer mineral water provided the drinks.

The highly successful event that attracted over 30 entries was jointly organized and promoted with www.my-kart.org and www.pitstop.com.my. Flying the flag for A1 Team Malaysia alongside Lim were Azrai Razuan and Hairul Ezwan. Invited drivers included the current leader of the Malaysian and Asian Rotax Max Junior Championship, Nabil Jeffri, Nik Iruwan, two PLUS-supported foreign exchange students from Germany and Tasmania and members of the media.

The team’s honor was upheld by Lim emerging as Champion, Iruwan took the runner-up slot, but the surprise of the event was the speed of Nazrul Izham from the Malay Mail who took third place.

Meanwhile A1 Team Monaco seat holder, Clivio Piccione, is obviously limbering up for the new season as he has attended a martial arts training camp in France, and A1 Team Ireland’s drivers have been having fun at the Goodwood Festival of Speed. Adam Carroll blasted up the famous hill in the World First Lola F3 car made from sustainable and renewable materials and Niall Quinn was behind the wheel of a Lamborghini.

Entries for the A1GP Quiz to find the series’ most knowledgeable fan have officially closed and the winner has been announced. No one got all 30 questions right, but Filip Matzke from the Czech Republic managed 29 correct answers. Behind him tying for second with 28 right each were Chris “TheChrisD" Daly, Lutz Huppenbauer, and Laurence Thorn. It wasn’t the same question that caught everyone out, and between all the contestants every question was answered correctly. Anyone wanting to still have fun can go to www.A1GP.com and give them a try, but for those who don’t they can also find the answers on the site.
