Tryson moves to MWR

Kurt Busch crew chief Pat Tryson will leave Penske Racing to become crew chief for Martin Truex Jr. at Michael Waltrip Racing next year, MWR officials announced today in a news release.

Tryson earned his fifth Chase berth as a crew chief on Saturday night at Richmond International Raceway and will join MWR upon the conclusion of the season.

“Michael Waltrip Racing has really come onto the scene this year and the progress they have made over a very short time is impressive," Tryson said. “I believe that I can contribute. MWR is doing everything they can to get the NAPA Auto Parts Toyota back into victory lane and that’s what my focus will be. Martin is a talented driver and we’ll be doing everything we can to make that happen."

Tryson has been a crew chief for 13 seasons with stints for Kenny Bernstein’s King Racing, Roush Racing and Wood Brothers Racing prior to Penske Racing. He will be only the second crew chief for Truex, who has had Kevin “Bono" Manion in charge of his cars since he began his Cup career with Dale Earnhardt Inc.

Truex is leaving Earnhardt Ganassi Racing to drive for MWR next season.

“Pat is a passionate competitor, a winner and a championship contender," team co-owner Michael Waltrip said. “Those were the traits we were looking for in a crew chief that would help Martin deliver on the track for NAPA for years to come. We couldn’t be more proud to add a person of Pat’s caliber to our organization."
