Button can crawl to 2009 title in Brazil
His critics do not like the way the Brawn driver, after a dominant start to the 2009 season, is currently crawling his way to a mathematical title triumph.
The Times said he will be a champion "who has not won a race for months, who has tightened up in qualifying and who is now unable to dominate his teammate, Rubens Barrichello, a veteran of 17 seasons in the sport".
The Guardian said the Briton is waiting "in the wings" for F1's biggest prize, with his only rivals Rubens Barrichello and Sebastian Vettel able to win at Interlagos but still lose the title to Button if he finishes an almost anonymous fifth.
However, Lewis Hamilton had a slightly bigger points margin with two races to go in 2007, and still managed to lose the title to Kimi Raikkonen.
"You said it all," said Red Bull's Vettel after winning dominantly at Suzuka on Sunday.
"It can still be done," the German continued. "I will keep on pushing until the end, until the last breath.
"You can ask Lewis, I think Kimi had quite a big deficit with two races to go. Everyone said to Lewis it will not be a problem just to get a couple of points, but you can see sometimes, things just don't work your way," said Vettel.
