Webber to have last leg surgery next month

(GMM) Mark Webber will have surgery next month to remove the last artificial pieces from the leg he broke badly in a pre-season cycling crash.

Since he injured his right leg last November, Red Bull's Australian driver has gone under the knife for several follow-up operations.

He had pins removed in February, and screws taken out in separate procedures in both June and August.

The main titanium rod will now be taken out with an operation in November, after which the dramatic bump in his right shin will disappear.

Remarkably, Webber's 2009 season – featuring two wins and a guaranteed fourth place in the world championship – was the best so far in his eight year career.

"I had the worst preparation ever, but it turns out I've had my best season ever," he said, adding that next year should also be a good one for Red Bull.

"I think next season will start off not a million miles from how we've finished this one," Webber added.
