The $22 Million Ferrari

Ferrari 250 GTO – 4675 Series II GTO

A Ferrari 250 GTO with a celebrity past is up for sale for $US20 million ($A22.2 million). And it’s 47 years old.

The 275km/h Ferrari has a 3.0-litre V12 engine, and is one of just 36 cars ever made. No wonder its pricey.

The car is owned by a Japanese collector who is selling it through the European branch of Canadian-based specialists RM Auctions.

"The Ferrari GTO is unquestionably one of the most iconic and coveted cars in the world," says Max Girardo, managing director of RM Europe.

This car, known as 4675 GT because of its chassis number, is even more coveted because it is one of a limited few with Series II GTO bodywork.

The car was once owned by Pink Floyd drummer Nick Mason, and RM Europe say the car is also a famous racer.

"It was raced by such drivers as Guido Fossati, Jean Guichet, Oddone Sigala, Vincenzo Nember and Luigi Taramazzo and proved itself a tremendously capable racing car, rarely finishing outside the top three in its class and achieving numerous race wins."

Girardo says: “this is truly a rare occasion for collectors to acquire such an important piece of automotive history and we are pleased to be chosen by 4675 GT's current custodian to represent it on the open market."

Reports claim the Japanese collector is selling the car after deciding he is too old to race.
