Speeds top 200 mph in NASCAR spoiler test
Speeds were actually higher for some cars before the sanctioning body told teams to cut down the spoilers, which will replace the current rear wing in the Sprint Cup Series. NASCAR also issued smaller restrictor plates to limit horsepower at the 2.66-mile track, the series' biggest.
The changes helped increase drag and slow the cars after Toyotas driven by Denny Hamlin (202.170 mph), teammate Joey Logano (201.863) and Brian Vickers (200.163) topped the speed charts. Ten others hit 199 mph.
Teams had intended to use Tuesday's test devising setup packages for next month's Aaron's 499 at Talladega while trying out the new spoiler, which NASCAR will decide when to implement after next week's test at 1.5-mile Charlotte Motor Speedway. The day began with cars using a 11/32-inch plate before switching to a 31/32-inch plate for the afternoon along with smaller spoilers. More at USA Today
