Former champion Rigon returns to Superleague Formula
The Italian was the series’ very first champion back in 2008 when he steered Chinese club Beijing Guoan to the title, before moving to Olympiacos for the first three races of last season.
Anderlecht meanwhile have proven one of the most consistent performers in Superleague Formula over the past two seasons after finishing sixth and fourth overall in the league standings, Yelmer Buurman claiming the club’s first victory at the final round in Jarama last year.
Davide Rigon: “I’m very happy to be representing Anderlecht this year. Obviously I will have another go at winning the championship and although I realize I’m facing a difficult task, I have total confidence in the Azerti team. I’m already looking forward to battling for podiums and victories for Anderlecht and the team."
The 29-times Belgian League champions will this season be run by the Azerti outfit who are based just 30 kilometers north of the football club’s Constant Vanden Stock Stadium near Brussels. And for Team Owner Wim Coekelbergs, it will be the closest he has ever come to representing his hometown club.
Wim Coekelbergs, Azerti Team Owner: “Disappointingly, I have never achieved my childhood dream of becoming the goalkeeper of RSCA. But now, representing the purple and white colors of my beloved club as the manager of the RSC Anderlecht racing team is just fantastic.
“With Davide Rigon, the 2008 Superleague Formula champion, we are convinced that RSCA will be in the international spotlight even more. I am sure that it won’t take long before Davide is presenting his first trophy to the home crowd.
“I’d like to thank RSC Anderlecht for their confidence and enthusiasm."
Anderlecht meanwhile are also happy about the appointment of Rigon and Azerti.
Herman Van Holsbeeck, RSCA General Director: “With Davide Rigon, the RSCA team has brought in an established driver while Wim Coekelbergs is well known for his craftsmanship. Superleague Formula is an elite, high class sport and a creative way to highlight soccer and the big clubs."
Superleague Formula 2010 kicks off at Silverstone next weekend (3/4 April).
